Budapest Airport handed over 24 571 EUR (more than 8.2 million HUF) today to the SUHANJ! Foundation, which provides sporting opportunities for disabled people and persons with reduced mobility. The amount was collected from registration fees for the Runway Run, a charity running race organized for the seventh time.
More than 1100 runners, including minister of foreign affairs and trade Péter Szijjártó, lined up on 31 August, the last Saturday of the summer, on the runway I at Budapest Airport. This was the seventh time that the race was held, for a good cause; every year, Budapest Airport and international aviation news website anna. aero support two charities from the registration fees: the Hungarian SUHANJ! Foundation and the British Anthony Nolan Foundation, aiding the recovery of young people with blood cancer.
This year, the symbolic check certifying the support was handed over to co-founder Péter Gusztos and managing director Alexandra Salamon from the SUHANJ! Foundation by Katalin Valentínyi, corporate communication, and government relations director, on behalf of Budapest Airport. As part of the ongoing cooperation between the two organizations, every year the foundation spends the donation on the development of the integrated gym it operates in the inner city of Budapest, called SUHANJ! Fitness, where disabled and able-bodied athletes can train together. The facility, established through a coordinated community effort, is the first fully accessible gym in Hungary, and its services have been in great demand since its opening. With its donation, Budapest Airport not only intends to support the development of the integrated gym but also a better quality of life for disabled, visually and mentally impaired people.
“Just like SUHANJ! Foundation, Budapest Airport considers it important that people of all kinds of abilities, including those with physical impairments or other types of reduced abilities, should be able to relish the joy of physical exercise together,” emphasized Kam Jandu, the chief commercial officer for Budapest Airport, during the handover of the symbolic check. “For that reason, we provide an opportunity for SUHANJ! athletes to participate in the Runway Run, and we are especially proud of the fact that we are able to commit a significant part of the proceeds from registration fees to support the operation of the integrated gym, thus providing integrated sporting opportunities for our fellow human beings,” he added.
“The Runway Run is a special event for us, not only because of its venue, although one rarely gets to race on a runway,” said Péter Gusztos. “It is also special because Budapest Airport’s attention also demonstrates that what the SUHANJ! Foundation is doing is important; to help our disabled peers experience the joy of movement and sport. We are honored by this partnership and the generous support received from Budapest Airport.”
